On October 31, 2017, National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) Chairman Philip A. Miscimarra and General Counsel Richard F. Griffin, Jr. announced John J. Walsh, Jr. as the new Regional Director for the Agency’s Region 2 Office in New York, New York. Region 2 is responsible for conducting elections, investigating unfair labor practice charges, and protecting the right of workers to act collectively to improve their wages and working conditions in Manhattan, the Bronx as well as Orange, Putnam, Rockland and Westchester counties in New York. He succeeds Karen Fernbach who recently retired from the Agency.
Mr. Walsh joined the NLRB in 1978 as a cooperative education student. Mr. Walsh converted to the Field Examiner position in 1979. He was promoted to Supervisory Field Examiner in 1990 and Assistant to the Regional Director in 1996 in Brooklyn and as the Assistant to the Regional Director in Newark in 2014. Since 2016, Mr. Walsh has served as the Regional Director for Region 1 which has jurisdiction over most of New England from offices located in Boston, Massachusetts and Hartford, Connecticut
The NLRB is an independent federal agency enforcing the National Labor Relations Act, which guarantees the right of most private sector employees to organize, to engage in group efforts to improve their wages and working conditions, to determine whether to have unions as their bargaining representative, to engage in collective bargaining, and to refrain from any of these activities. It acts to prevent and remedy unfair labor practices committed by private sector employers and unions.
