The Employment Justice Center, a 12-year-old nonprofit organization that protects the rights of low-wage workers in the Washington DC area, today recognized NLRB Chairman Mark Gaston Pearce as a “Champion of Justice” at its annual Labor Day Awards Breakfast.
“I have known Mark Pearce for many years, and he has always been a Champion of Justice for working Americans,” said EJC Executive Director Barbra Kavanaugh. The Center also honored volunteers and pro bono attorneys for their efforts to assist low-income workers in the capital area.
Chairman Pearce delivered the keynote address at the event, quoting former President Dwight D. Eisenhower, who in 1955 described the “American philosophy of labor” as one of mutual respect between employers and employees. “The economic interest and goal of employer and employee is one of mutual prosperity. Their economic future is inseparable,” President Eisenhower said at the time. That philosophy persisted for decades, Chairman Pearce said, but is less prevalent today.
He said a current goal of the NLRB is to educate American workers about their rights under the National Labor Relations Act, which apply to union and non-union settings.
