Washington, D.C. – National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) Acting Chairman Philip A. Miscimarra and General Counsel Richard F. Griffin, Jr. have named Paul Murphy the new Regional Director for the Agency’s Region 3 Office in Buffalo, New York. The Region 3 Office is responsible for conducting elections, investigating unfair labor practice charges, and protecting the right of workers to act collectively to improve their wages and working conditions throughout most of New York State and Vermont.
With nearly 40 years of service to the NLRB, Paul Murphy most recently served as the Assistant to the Regional Director in the Buffalo (Region 3) Regional Office. He succeeds Rhonda P. Ley who recently retired from the Agency.
A native of New York’s Finger Lakes Region, Mr. Murphy received his B.S. in Economics from SUNY Geneseo in 1978 and a Masters in Industrial and Labor Relations from Cornell University’s School of Industrial and Labor Relations in 1980. He started his career with the Agency as a co-op Field Examiner in Cleveland (Region 8) in 1979 and returned there as a full-time Field Examiner in 1980. He transferred to Region 3 in 1982. He was promoted to Supervisory Examiner in 1997 and to Assistant to the Regional Director in 2007.
The NLRB is an independent federal agency enforcing the National Labor Relations Act, which guarantees the right of most private sector employees to organize, to engage in group efforts to improve their wages and working conditions, to determine whether to have unions as their bargaining representative, to engage in collective bargaining, and to refrain from any of these activities. It acts to prevent and remedy unfair labor practices committed by private sector employers and unions.
