Remembering Tom Miller, long-time Director of the NLRB Division of Information

Thomas W. Miller, Jr., who directed the NLRB Office of Information for 23 years before retiring in 1983, died on August 26 at Hilton Head Island, S.C. after a short illness. He was 95.
Born and raised in Texas, Mr. Miller joined the United Press in Dallas as an office boy after high school and rose through the ranks to become a bureau manager. During World War II, he served in the Army Air Corps, teaching navigation and then flying in China. He married Helen Hadley Miller and the couple had a daughter, Tamara.
In 1960, Mr. Miller joined the NLRB as Director of the Division of Information. In 1971, then widowed, he married Vivian Asplund, an appellate attorney at the NLRB.
In 1988, the Millers moved to Hilton Head. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed poker and most spectator sports. He also helped children in after-school programs and was named volunteer of the year at the Island Recretaion Center in 1994-1995. Throughout his life, he belonged to many churches, clubs and organizations, including the National Press Club, the Army Navy Club and the Army and Navy Country Club.
Mr. Miller is survived by his wife, Vivian Miller, his daughter and son-in-law Tamara and Martin Trocki of Garrett Park, Maryland, and a granddaughter, Elena Trocki of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. A Celebration of Life is scheduled for 4 pm on Friday, August 31 at The Cypress in Hilton Head Plantation.
