On Wednesday, November 10, 2021, Regional Director Laura Sacks welcomed the Consul General of Mexico in Boston, Alberto Fierro, to the regional office for the signing of a Letter of Arrangement between Region 1 and the Mexican Consulate in Boston. Similar to the Letter of Arrangement signed at the national level between the Board and the Mexican Foreign Ministry, the letter signed by Director Sacks and Consul General Fierro states the intent of the Region and the Consulate to work together to foster an environment where workers’ rights and employer obligations under the Act are acknowledged and respected, particularly with regard to Mexican national workers and business owners in the New England area. To accomplish this goal, the parties will work together to develop cooperative activities and information sharing, including through outreach, education, training and best practices.
The Region and the Consulate have already begun such collaboration—for example, Region 1 Board agents presented on worker rights under the Act during the Consulate’s Labor Rights Week programming in August. Region 1 looks forward to continued work with the Consulate and its staff to make sure that employee rights under the Act continue to be strongly protected throughout New England.
Established in 1935, the National Labor Relations Board is an independent federal agency that protects employees, employers, and unions from unfair labor practices and protects the right of private sector employees to join together, with or without a union, to improve wages, benefits and working conditions. The NLRB conducts hundreds of workplace elections and investigates thousands of unfair labor practice charges each year. Region 1 serves areas in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont from its Regional Office in Boston and Subregional Office in Hartford.
