About NLRB

Established in 1935, the National Labor Relations Board is an independent federal agency that protects employees, employers, and unions from unfair labor practices and protects the right of private sector employees to join together, with or without a union, to improve wages, benefits and working conditions. The NLRB conducts hundreds of workplace elections and investigates thousands of unfair labor practice charges each year. Region 13 serves areas in Illinois and Indiana from its Regional Office in Chicago.

Board finds Chicago bus operator illegally fired employees and committed other violations during union organizing campaign

The National Labor Relations Board ruled this week that Latino Express Inc., a Chicago-area bus company, violated federal labor law by firing two employees and committing a host of other unfair labor practices during a union organizing campaign.

Federal judge orders Chicago bus company to rehire drivers, stop interrogating employees

A U.S. District Court Judge has ordered a Chicago bus company to reinstate two drivers who were fired after signing cards in favor of a union election, and to stop questioning employees about their union activities, while a case involving the company moves through the NLRB process.

Judge John F. Grady issued the temporary injunction at the request of the NLRB on Wednesday, stating that “employees will suffer irreparable harm awaiting a ruling from the Board, which may take many months…”

Peter S. Ohr Named NLRB Regional Director in Chicago

NLRB Chairman Mark Gaston Pearce and Acting General Counsel Lafe E. Solomon have announced the appointment of Peter Sung Ohr as Regional Director in the Chicago Regional Office (Region 13).  Mr. Ohr will be responsible for the enforcement of the nation’s primary labor law covering private sector employees in Cook, Du Page, Kane, Lake, and Will Counties in Illinois, and Lake County in Indiana.

Administrative Law Judge rules Chicago car dealership had overly broad employee policy, but discharged employee’s activity not protected

A National Labor Relations Board Administrative Law Judge ruled on Wednesday that Knauz BMW, a Chicago area car dealership, did not wrongfully terminate an employee for his Facebook postings. However, Judge Joel P. Biblowitz also found that the dealership had an overly broad employee policy, and ordered posting of a notice informing employees of their right to engage in protected concerted activity.

Federal judge orders Illinois gas hauling company to recognize union, restore pay and benefits

At the request of the National Labor Relations Board, a U.S. District Court has ordered an Illinois gas hauling company to recognize and bargain with the union representing its drivers, even though the original company closed and its operations were transferred to a non-union entity owned and managed by the same people. The injunction, issued July 11 by District Court Judge Robert M. Dow, Jr., also compels the company to restore the union pay and benefits that the drivers lost in the transfer, pending final resolution of the case before the Board.
