Established in 1935, the National Labor Relations Board is an independent federal agency that protects employees, employers, and unions from unfair labor practices and protects the right of private sector employees to join together, with or without a union, to improve wages, benefits and working conditions. The NLRB conducts hundreds of workplace elections and investigates thousands of unfair labor practice charges each year. Region 13 serves areas in Illinois and Indiana from its Regional Office in Chicago.
NLRB Director for Region 13 issues Decision in Northwestern University Athletes Case
Regional Director, Peter Sung Ohr, has issued a Decision in 13-RC-121359 finding the Grant-in-aid scholarship football players are employees under the NLRA and has directed an election to take place.
The parties have until April 9, 2014 to file with the Board in Washington, D.C. a Request for Review of the Decision.

REGION 13 OUTREACH UPDATE
The winter months have been a busy time for Region 13’s outreach efforts. Our staff provided presentations for various organizations and community groups. Below are a couple of the highlights.
On November 13, 2013, Liz Galliano and Liz Cortez provided an overview of the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA) to the U.S. Department of Labor- Office of Federal Contracts Compliance Programs and Wage and Hour Divisions.

Labor Rights Week August 26 – 30, 2013
Again this year the Chicago Office of the National Labor Relations Board will participate in the sixth Labor Rights Week. Labor Rights Week is an initiative to increase awareness and inform the Spanish-speaking community of their labor rights and the resources available to them. National Labor Relations Board and Mexican Foreign Ministry Sign Letter of Agreement
August 26, 2013 the Chicago Office of the NLRB and the Mexican Consulate in Chicago will sign a local agreement to strengthen cooperation and collaboration between the NLRB and the Consulate and improve access to information and education regarding rights and responsibilities for Mexican workers, their employers, and Mexican business owners in the United States.
Daniel Nelson appointed Assistant to the Regional Director in Chicago office
National Labor Relations Board Acting General Counsel Lafe Solomon announced the appointment of Daniel N. Nelson as the Assistant to the Regional Director of the NLRB’s Regional Office in Chicago, Illinois (Region 13). In his new position, Mr. Nelson will assist Regional Director Peter Ohr in the administration and enforcement of the National Labor Relations Act in the Chicago area and northwestern Indiana.
